Cairo in a weekend

48 h route4 stopsBest: October-April. June to August, Giza is unviable at middayUpdated July 2026

IN SHORT

Cairo has five thousand years stacked up and a weekend only scratches the surface, but it covers the two layers that matter: the pharaonic (Giza, the GEM, Saqqara) and the medieval (Islamic and Coptic Cairo). Cramming them into one day is a mistake: they’re different worlds at opposite ends of the city.

Saturday for pharaohs, Sunday for the Middle Ages. And a warning nobody gives: Cairo traffic is among the worst in the world and any journey takes twice what you think. Plan fewer things than you’d like.

The route, stop by stop

4 STOPS
  1. 01

Saturday: Giza and the Grand Museum

    ⏱ 8 h

Leave at eight for Giza: the pyramids, the Sphinx and, if you fancy it, the inside of the Great Pyramid.

At midday, when the sun is vertical and there’s no shade, cross to the Grand Egyptian Museum, two kilometres away and air-conditioned.

The GEM needs three hours and holds the complete Tutankhamun. It’s a long, tiring day, but it’s the reason for the trip.

  2. 02

Saturday night: a felucca on the Nile

⏱ 2 hJetties in Zamalek or Garden City

The felucca, a lateen-sailed boat, has plied the Nile since the pharaohs, and in Cairo it’s hired by the hour at the jetties in Zamalek or Garden City, boatman included. It has no engine: it moves with the wind, in silence. At sunset, with the city lighting up on both banks, it’s the best calm plan in Cairo and it costs very little. Agree the price and the duration before boarding.

  3. 03

    Sunday: Islamic Cairo

⏱ 4 hTaxi east. Start at the Citadel

Saladin’s Citadel with the Alabaster Mosque and the views, then Al-Muizz street, an open-air museum: a kilometre of medieval Islamic architecture (mosques, madrasas, palaces) almost intact, pedestrian and with barely any tourists. Finish at Khan el-Khalili, the 1382 souk, with tea at El Fishawi. It’s the part of Cairo people don’t expect and the one they like most.

  4. 04

    Sunday afternoon: Coptic Cairo

    ⏱ 2 hMetro L1 to Mar Girgis

Egypt’s oldest Christian quarter, to the south and reachable by metro: 4th- and 5th-century Coptic churches inside a Roman fortress, the Hanging Church suspended over an ancient gate, and the Ben Ezra synagogue.

In the crypt of the Church of St Sergius, tradition says the Holy Family hid during their flight into Egypt.

It’s a silent, green corner in the middle of twenty million people, and it shows that Egypt wasn’t always Muslim.

Frequently asked

How many days do you need for Cairo?

Two full days cover the essentials: one for Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum, and one for Islamic and Coptic Cairo. With three, you can add Saqqara and Memphis, where the pyramid story actually begins.

What is a felucca and is it worth it?

It’s the traditional engineless Nile sailboat, hired by the hour with a boatman at the jetties in Zamalek or Garden City. At sunset it’s the best calm plan in Cairo and it costs very little. Agree price and duration before boarding.

Is Cairo exhausting?

Quite: it’s a city of over twenty million with some of the worst traffic in the world, so any journey takes twice as long as planned. Plan fewer things than you’d like and use the metro when you can.
