Istanbul airport to the centre

1 h route3 stopsBest: The M11 isn’t 24h: at night, Havaist or a taxiUpdated July 2026

IN SHORT

Istanbul airport (IST) sits about 40 kilometres from the centre, so this trip isn’t a detail: it’s an hour of your life. There are three ways and none is perfect.

The main trap: the M11 metro is fast and modern but does NOT reach the old town. It drops you at Gayrettepe or Kağıthane and from there you change, to the M2 or the M7, so for Sultanahmet expect two changes and your cases on the stairs. Fares and times are on the operator’s site, linked from the city page.

The route, stop by stop

3 STOPS
  1. 01

Metro M11: fast, but you’ll change

    ⏱ 30-40 min

The M11 line links the airport to Gayrettepe in about 30 minutes: underground, driverless and fast. The problem is that Gayrettepe is in the business district, not the old town. From there you change to the M2 (heading down to Şişhane and Taksim) or, at Kağıthane, to the M7. For Sultanahmet expect two changes and plenty of stairs. It’s the cheap, good option if you’re staying in Şişli, Levent or Taksim, and travelling light.

  2. 02

Havaist: the coach, and what changed in 2026

The Havaist coaches leave the airport for the main districts, run 24 hours, are comfortable and have luggage space. HVL-9 reaches Taksim in around an hour and a half, via Beşiktaş and Levent.

And here’s the fact almost no guide has up to date: the direct line to Sultanahmet was suspended in January 2026. For the old town, the route today is HVL-1 to Aksaray and then the T1 tram two stops. Which means: nothing reaches the old town directly, not the metro and not the coach, and you have to accept one change with your bags.

The other catch is Istanbul traffic, which is legendary: in a jam the coach takes considerably longer than the metro. And they don’t take cash: contactless, the app or an İstanbulkart.

  3. 03

Taxi: the yellow ones, on the meter

The yellow ones run on the meter. The airport is genuinely far, about 40 km, so it’s a long, expensive ride compared with the alternatives, but it’s the only one that drops you at the door at any hour.

Take them only from the official terminal rank and make sure the meter goes on.

If you land in the small hours, when the metro isn’t running, it’s this or Havaist.

Frequently asked

Does the Istanbul airport metro reach Sultanahmet?

Not directly. The M11 reaches Gayrettepe and Kağıthane, in the business district, and from there you change to the M2 or M7: expect two changes. And the Havaist coach doesn’t either: its direct Sultanahmet line was suspended in January 2026, so today it’s HVL-1 to Aksaray and the T1 tram two stops. Nothing reaches the old town directly.

How far is Istanbul airport from the centre?

About 40 kilometres, north-west of the city on the European side. The trip runs to roughly an hour by any means, and with Istanbul traffic it can be considerably more.

How do you get from Istanbul airport to the centre at night?

By taxi or on the Havaist coaches, depending on the route’s timetable. The M11 metro doesn’t run 24 hours, so at night it isn’t an option: check the operator’s timetable before you fly.
