Day trips from Tirana

8 h route5 stopsBest: Berat needs an early start: a long two hours each wayUpdated July 2026

IN SHORT

Albania is small on the map and large on the clock: the roads are mountain roads and the distances mislead. Before planning anything it’s worth being clear about what’s genuinely near and what isn’t, because half the internet sells the Riviera as though Tirana were the base, and it isn’t.

What is near: a castle with the country’s prettiest bazaar half an hour away, a huge Roman amphitheatre thirty-five kilometres out, and a 1,600-metre mountain on the edge of the city. And a long two hours away, Berat, which is among the best in the Balkans.

The route, stop by stop

5 STOPS
  1. 01

    Kruja · 30 km

    ⏱ 5 hNorth, a good half hour

The classic trip and the closest. Kruja was the stronghold of Skanderbeg, the national hero, and from this castle clinging to the hillside he held off the Ottomans for twenty-five years. Inside is the national museum dedicated to him, in an eighties building designed, once again, by Hoxha’s daughter.

But what makes the trip is the bazaar on the way up: a cobbled street of wooden stalls selling carpets, copper, silver and genuine antiques, including objects from the communist period.

It’s the prettiest street in Albania and the best place in the country to buy something that isn’t a fridge magnet.

  2. 02

    Durrës · 35 km

⏱ 5 hWest, on the coast. It’s the country’s port

Albania’s oldest city and its port, half an hour from Tirana. What to see is the 2nd-century Roman amphitheatre: the largest in the Balkans, with room for around twenty thousand, buried and forgotten until it turned up by accident in the 1960s. Today there are houses built on its rim: the modern city literally grew over the top of it. Durrës beach is what gets marketed and it’s the weakest part: long, heavily built up and nothing like the south of the country. Go for the amphitheatre and the museum, not the sand.

  3. 03

    Berat · ~2 h

⏱ 10 hSouth. A long two hours by road

The long trip and the one most worth it if you have a full day. Berat is World Heritage and they call it the city of a thousand windows for its white Ottoman houses stacked up the hillside, one above the other, all facing the river: it’s the image of Albania you’ve seen without knowing it was Berat.

The oddity is at the top: the castle isn’t a ruin you visit, it’s an inhabited neighbourhood. Inside the walls are families who have lived there for generations, with their houses, their Byzantine churches and their chickens. You climb on foot up a steep slope.

It’s a long two hours each way, so leave early and come back at night, or sleep there.

  4. 04

    Mount Dajti · 25 min

⏱ 4 hCable car from the eastern edge of the city

The easiest and the best-combining one. The Dajti Ekspres leaves the edge of the city and climbs in a quarter of an hour to near the summit, around 1,600 metres: all of Tirana below, the plain, and the Adriatic behind it on a clear day. The key is that the lower station sits next to Bunk’Art 1, the big bunker. So the perfect outing is a double: the morning underground in the five floors of Hoxha’s shelter, and the afternoon at 1,600 metres looking at the country he kept locked up. It’s the best half day in Tirana and no car is needed.

  5. 05

The Riviera: not a day trip

This is here to save you the mistake, because it’s the most common one: the turquoise beaches you’ve seen of Albania (Ksamil, Dhërmi, Himara, Jale) are in the south, on the Riviera, and from Tirana they’re a long three to four hours away on mountain roads. Each way.

Doing it in a day means seven or eight hours of driving for a few hours of beach, and it doesn’t pay. The Riviera is its own trip, three days upwards, based in Sarandë or Himara, usually combined with Gjirokastër or Butrint.

If you’re in Tirana for a weekend, forget it: the coast near you is Durrës, and it isn’t remotely the same thing.
