Bali in a week

168 h route4 stopsBest: April-June and September: dry, without the August crushUpdated July 2026

IN SHORT

The Bali mistake isn’t choosing the wrong places, it’s choosing the wrong structure. People book seven nights in Canggu, look at the map, see Ubud is 35 kilometres away and plan to go for a day. That day becomes four hours in a car and an exhausted afternoon.

The structure that works is splitting the week in two and moving the suitcase halfway: a few days inland and a few on the coast, or the reverse. It sounds like more work and it’s exactly the opposite: it saves you 80% of the travelling. Bali is several islands in one and they can’t be seen from the same place.

The route, stop by stop

4 STOPS
  1. 01

Days 1-3: inland, based in Ubud

    ⏱ 3 días

Start inland and use the jet lag in your favour: for the first few days you’ll wake at five in the morning anyway, and that’s exactly what’s needed here. The Tegallalang terraces at dawn, the Campuhan ridge walk at seven, Batur if you fancy the two-in-the-morning trek.

Based in Ubud (better two or three kilometres out, among the rice fields, which is cheaper and prettier) these fall without a long drive: the terraces, the Monkey Forest, Tirta Empul, and the Sidemen valley if you want the Ubud of thirty years ago.

Three days is plenty and you leave with the cultural half done.

    Day 4: move the suitcase

⏱ 1 díaCar with a driver: it costs little and takes half a day

The hinge day has a trick to it: don’t do it as a transfer, do it as a day trip with a different ending. Hire a car with a driver for the day, it costs far less than you imagine, and come down from Ubud to the coast stopping wherever you like. Tanah Lot fits on the way if you’re heading south-west, or the eastern temples if you’re heading to Sanur. The driver waits, carries your suitcase and you don’t pay for three separate transfers. Same money, and the day counts instead of evaporating.

  3. 03

    Days 5-7: the coast

    ⏱ 3 días

Here you choose by what you came for, and all three options are legitimate. Canggu or Seminyak for surf, beach clubs and cafés, Uluwatu for cliffs, serious waves and hidden coves below, Sanur for genuinely calm sea, a flat promenade and quiet, and with children, this one wins outright.

Save the Nusa Penida trip for these days, since the boat leaves from Sanur, and the Uluwatu sunset with the kecak. And keep one whole day with no plan: Bali punishes a tight schedule and rewards an afternoon of doing nothing.

    What doesn’t fit

Be honest with the calendar. The Gili Islands are between an hour and a half and two and a half hours away by boat across open sea, and the boats cancel in bad weather: that needs two nights minimum and a buffer in case you’re stuck. In a week with Ubud and the coast, they don’t fit.

Same with the north (Lovina, Amed, the north-eastern volcanoes) and the west. Bali is small on the map and large on the clock: forty kilometres can be two hours.

With seven days, two zones. With ten or twelve, three. Cramming in five means spending the trip on the road and going home to recover.

Frequently asked

How many days do you need for Bali?

Seven minimum, split across two bases: a few days inland (Ubud) and a few on the coast, moving the suitcase midweek. Trying to see it all from one place means losing hours on the road: forty kilometres can be two hours.

Can you see Ubud in a day from Canggu?

You can, but it’s a bad plan: about four hours of driving there and back mid-afternoon, for one afternoon in Ubud. Better to split the week and sleep a few days in each zone. Do the transfer with a driver, stopping along the way, so it isn’t lost time.

Do the Gili Islands fit into a week in Bali?

Not comfortably: they’re between an hour and a half and two and a half hours by fast boat each way across open sea, and they cancel in bad weather, so they need two nights and a buffer in case you’re stranded. With seven days, stick to two zones of Bali.
