From Cancún airport to the city

1 h route3 stopsBest: Stable. ADO stops running late at nightUpdated July 2026

IN SHORT

Cancún has a huge airport, four terminals and its own railway station, and even so getting to your hotel can go wrong if you assume the obvious. Two warnings up front: the ones that spoil most arrivals.

First: the Tren Maya has its largest station here, but there is NO station in downtown Cancún. It’s for the Riviera Maya or Chichén Itzá, not for your hotel. Second: the R-1 and R-2 city buses, which run the length of the Hotel Zone, do NOT reach the airport.

The route, stop by stop

3 STOPS
  1. 01

    ADO: the only public transport

    ⏱ 25-40 min

ADO runs the airport’s only public bus line. It picks up right outside terminals 2, 3 and 4 and runs non-stop to the ADO terminal in downtown Cancún, beside Avenida Tulum. In normal conditions that’s twenty-five to forty minutes. What to be clear about: **it stops at no hotel**. Only at ADO terminals. If your hotel is in the Hotel Zone, this leaves you downtown and from there you walk out to Avenida Tulum and take the R-1 up Kukulcán. That’s two steps, not one.

  2. 02

Tren Maya: for the Riviera, not for the city

Cancún Aeropuerto, the largest station on the whole Tren Maya network, sits inside the airport grounds. You reach it on the free Conexión Intermodal shuttle, which links all four terminals to the station.

Two directions leave from here: south to Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. West to Leona Vicario, Valladolid and Chichén Itzá.

What it does not do is take you into Cancún, because that station doesn’t exist. It’s an excellent way to start the trip if you’re sleeping on the Riviera Maya, and no help at all if you’re sleeping on Kukulcán.

  3. 03

Taxi: expensive, direct, and with its own rules

    ⏱ 20-40 min

Taxis operating at the airport hold a federal concession and charge by zone, not by meter: you pay according to which stretch you’re going to. It is by some distance the most expensive option at the airport, and also the only one that drops you at the hotel door at any hour. A detail that surprises everyone: Cancún’s city taxis, far cheaper, **cannot pick up at the airport**, only drop off. That’s why the return trip usually costs considerably less than the one out. Arrange it at your hotel or downtown and you’ll feel the difference.

Frequently asked

How do I reach the Hotel Zone on public transport?

In two steps: ADO from terminal 2, 3 or 4 to the downtown terminal, then out to Avenida Tulum for an R-1, which runs the whole of Boulevard Kukulcán. There is no direct city line between the airport and the Hotel Zone.

Does the Tren Maya reach downtown Cancún?

No. Its station is inside the airport and there is no station in the city of Cancún. It serves Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Valladolid and Chichén Itzá.
