The beaches of Cancún

IN SHORT

Cancún’s number-seven shape isn’t a quirk of the map: it decides which sea you get. The short stretch, running north-south at the start, faces the channel between Cancún and Isla Mujeres and has flat, shallow water. The long stretch, dropping straight down, faces the open Caribbean, with real swell and real undertow.

That alone lets you choose without looking at a single photo: with children, or if you want to swim, take the north stretch. For the endless-white-sand postcard, the east stretch. And all along the coast, the sand is public by law.

The route, stop by stop

3 STOPS
  1. 01

    Playa Tortugas / Playa Caracol

    ⏱ 2 h

They take up the first kilometres of Kukulcán, facing the channel, and form the sheltered part: barely any waves and a bottom that drops slowly. It’s where Cancún families with children go, and where ferries and snorkelling boats leave from, so there’s more bustle and less postcard. In exchange, it’s the only area where bathing is genuinely calm. If you’ve seen videos of people being tumbled in the Cancún shorebreak, that was the other stretch.

  2. 02

    Playa Delfines

    ⏱ 2 h

Cancún’s big public beach looks out from a rise, so it has the best view of the whole sandbar. It’s also where the CANCÚN sign stands, which is where everyone takes the photo. A warning that matters: it faces the open Caribbean, and there is swell and rip current here. There are flags and you should obey them, on a red flag you don’t go in, however flat it looks from above. The view deceives precisely because you’re seeing it from a lookout.

  3. 03

    Punta Nizuc

    ⏱ 1.5 h

At the southern tip of the sandbar, where Kukulcán turns back towards the mainland, the Mesoamerican reef comes close to shore. It’s the best spot in Cancún proper to put your head under with a snorkel without taking a boat.

It’s also the quietest stretch of the Hotel Zone, with fewer hotels and fewer people.

Mind the rocks and coral: go in with water shoes, and touch nothing. The coral you brush against dies.

Frequently asked

What is sargassum and when does it appear?

A brown seaweed that arrives en masse on the Caribbean coast, mainly from May to October. It isn’t dangerous, but it piles up, smells strong as it rots and discolours the water. It varies hugely day to day and beach to beach. The north stretch usually escapes it better.
