El Prat to the centre: which one to take

1 h route3 stopsBest: Check your terminal first: it changes the answerUpdated July 2026

IN SHORT

Two traps catch plenty of people on the airport-to-centre run. First: the metro (L9 Sud) serves both terminals but does NOT reach the centre. You have to change. Second: the commuter train (R2 Nord), which does reach Sants and Passeig de Gràcia, only leaves from T2.

So the first thing is knowing which terminal you’re landing at or leaving from: it changes the whole answer. A free Aena shuttle runs between T1 and T2. There are official taxi ranks at both terminals. Fares and timetables for each option live on the operator’s site, linked from the city page.

The route, stop by stop

  1. 01

Cercanías R2 Nord: the best if you’re flying from T2

From T2 only. From T1, take the free shuttle first

Only the commuter train drops you straight in the centre: Sants (the big station, with high-speed trains) and Passeig de Gràcia, in the heart of the Eixample next to Casa Batlló. No changes. The catch: it only leaves from T2. If your flight lands at T1, you have to take the free inter-terminal bus first, and that adds up. And it runs every 30 minutes, so check the timetable before crossing over.

  2. 02

Metro L9 Sud: reaches both terminals, but not the centre

Line 9 Sud reaches both terminals, T1 and T2, without a shuttle. The problem: it doesn’t enter the centre. It drops you at Zona Universitària and from there you must change lines to get anywhere.

It also carries its own airport fare, pricier than the normal city ticket, and travel passes don’t cover it.

It’s a good option if you’re staying uptown or leaving from T1 with light luggage.

  3. 03

The terminal shuttle: free, and you’ll need it

Aena runs a free bus between T1 and T2, and it’s the piece that makes everything else work: if your flight leaves from T1 and you want the commuter train, you have to take it. Factor in its time: between waiting for the shuttle, crossing over and waiting for the train (every 30 min), you can lose more than you think. If you’re tight, the metro from T1 or a taxi work out better.

On the R2 Nord commuter train from T2, which stops at Passeig de Gràcia with no changes. From T1 you need the free shuttle to T2 first.
