Waterfalls and mountains in Antalya

6 h route5 stopsBest: Spring: more water, and there’s still snow on the mountainUpdated July 2026

IN SHORT

Antalya is built on a travertine cliff at the foot of the Bey mountains, and those two facts explain its landscape: the rivers coming down off the mountain fall off the edge when they reach it, some inland and one straight into the sea.

It’s the content that best fills an afternoon without ruins, and it’s what makes the city make sense: in one day you can be at 2,365 metres and swim in the Mediterranean, and in spring that includes snow.

The route, stop by stop

5 STOPS
  1. 01

    Düden Başı, the upper falls

⏱ 2 hAbout 10 km north of the centre

The Upper Düden falls sit inland, in a park of old trees, and their trick is that the water falls over a cave: a path runs behind the curtain, so you look at it from inside, with the noise and the cool air.

This is where Antalya’s own people come at the weekend, with their tea and their picnic, not a set built for tourists.

It runs fuller in spring. By late summer it can be thin.

  2. 02

The lower Düden, falling into the sea

⏱ 2 hAt Lara, east, or by boat from the old harbour

The same river, further down, does what almost no river does: reaches the edge of the Lara cliff and drops straight into the sea, some forty metres. You can see it from the viewpoint above, which is fine and free. But the good view is from the water, which is why boats leave the old harbour in Kaleiçi to pull up near the fall. It’s the city’s classic short trip and it fits in half an afternoon.

  3. 03

    The Tünektepe cable car

⏱ 2 hAt the western end of Konyaaltı

Tünektepe hill closes the bay to the west and has a cable car up from the end of Konyaaltı. From the top the city makes sense at a glance: the cliff, the thirty kilometres of bay and the Bey mountains shutting the horizon. It’s short, it’s cheap and it’s the best thing to do with a spare hour. At sunset, packed.

  4. 04

Tahtalı: 2,365 metres above the beach

    ⏱ 4 hBy Kemer, about 50 km south-west

Mount Tahtalı, the Lycians’ Olympos, is 2,365 metres high and has a cable car up from the coast, next to Kemer. The contrast is the whole point: down below you’re on the beach in a T-shirt, and twenty minutes later it’s cold and windy up top.

The view takes in the entire Lycian coast. Go in spring and there’s snow up there while people swim below, and that is exactly Antalya’s argument.

Take a layer even in August: this isn’t boilerplate, it’s genuinely cold.

  5. 05

Saklıkent: ski and swim on the same day

⏱ Media jornadaOn Mount Bakırlı, about 50 km north-west

The Saklıkent ski centre clings to Mount Bakırlı, less than an hour from the centre, and it feeds Antalya’s most repeated claim: ski in the morning and swim in the afternoon on the same day. It’s true, with conditions: it only lines up in late winter and spring, when there’s still snow up there and the sea is already bearable down here. It’s a small resort, so don’t come expecting the Alps. The plan is the anecdote, and the anecdote is a great one.

Frequently asked

Can you ski and swim on the same day in Antalya?

Yes, and it’s the city’s classic claim: the Saklıkent ski centre on Mount Bakırlı is under an hour from the beach. It only lines up in late winter and spring, when there’s still snow up top and the sea is already bearable.

What’s the difference between the Upper and Lower Düden falls?

The Upper (Düden Başı) is about 10 km inland in a park, and you can walk behind the water through a cave. The Lower drops some forty metres off the Lara cliff straight into the sea and is best seen from a boat.

Is the Tahtalı cable car worth it?

Yes: it climbs to 2,365 metres from the coast by Kemer, with a view over the whole Lycian coast. The contrast makes it, especially in spring, with snow above and people swimming below. Bring a layer even in summer.
