Seville in a day

8 h route4 stopsBest: Start at 9am. In summer, stop at 2pmUpdated July 2026

IN SHORT

Seville has one enormous advantage: everything essential is on the same block. The cathedral, the Giralda, the Alcázar and the Archive of the Indies touch each other, and they’re four World Heritage Sites in a row. Add a walk through Santa Cruz and Triana and the day is done.

The one non-negotiable rule is the heat: in summer the city is seen from nine to two and after eight in the evening. In between you cannot be on the street, and that isn’t an exaggeration. Book tickets online and start early.

The route, stop by stop

4 STOPS
  1. 01

The Cathedral, the Giralda and the Alcázar

    ⏱ 4 h

The day’s central block: the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, the Giralda that was a minaret and is climbed by ramps, and the Real Alcázar, the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe. The three take the whole morning and earn every minute.

Book online, especially the Alcázar, which caps numbers by time slot.

Start at nine: they’re cool interiors and nearly empty at that hour, the exact opposite of midday.

  2. 02

    The Santa Cruz quarter

⏱ 1 hRight outside the Alcázar

The old Jewish quarter, right against the Alcázar: a labyrinth of white alleys a metre wide, patios full of pots, orange trees and tiny squares. It’s postcard Seville and it’s walked without a plan. Look for Calle Agua and the Murillo Gardens to escape the crowd. At midday the shade of those alleys is one of the few things that saves the walk in summer.

  3. 03

    Plaza de España

⏱ 1 hFifteen minutes on foot through the María Luisa Park

The square built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition: a monumental 200-metre semicircle with a canal, tiled bridges and a decorated bench for every province of Spain. It’s excessive and it’s beautiful. You can row on the canal and there are horse carriages. Fans will recognise Naboo’s palace from Star Wars and scenes from Lawrence of Arabia. The María Luisa Park, next door, is the best shade in the city.

  4. 04

    Triana at sunset

⏱ 2 hAcross the Isabel II bridge

Cross the Guadalquivir by the Triana bridge as the sun starts to drop: the sailors’ and potters’ quarter, with its market over the Inquisition’s ruins and Calle Betis facing the city. It’s the perfect close: the westering light gilds the coloured houses, you eat tapas by the river and the Giralda lights up opposite. If you have one night in Seville, make it this one.
