Eating in Seville: tapas and areas

3 h route4 stopsBest: Aperitif 1.30-3pm, or tapas from 9pmUpdated July 2026

IN SHORT

Seville eats standing, at the bar. The tapa was born in Andalusia and here it’s still the normal way to eat: order one, drink a beer or a fino, pay, move to the next bar. Sitting at a table costs more and is less fun.

We won’t give you a bar list: we give you the areas and the dishes. And a note: there are taverns here that have served the same thing for over a century, and those do earn a name, because they aren’t going to change.

The route, stop by stop

4 STOPS
  1. 01

    How tapeo works

The mechanics: you go in, make space at the bar, order a beer or a fino and a tapa, eat it standing, pay and move to the next bar. Three or four bars make a dinner.

Nobody books and nobody stays two hours.

Watch the detail that throws people: many places have three prices for the same thing (tapa, half portion and full portion) and sitting at a table or terrace raises the bill. At the bar it’s always cheaper.

  2. 02

    Santa Cruz and the centre

The centre and Santa Cruz gather taverns over a hundred years old (tiles, barrels and hanging hams) right next to tourist traps.

The way to tell them apart is to look at who’s inside: if it’s all people holding maps, keep walking.

The usual rule: no photos of food by the door, no waiter touting in the street. And if a place has been open a century, the tiles on the façade say so, not a neon sign.

  3. 03

    Triana and the Alameda

Triana across the river. The Alameda, north of the centre

Cross the river to Triana or head up to the Alameda de Hércules and prices drop while quality rises: these are the barrios where people who live here eat. In Triana, the market and the streets around it.

In the Alameda, the younger, more alternative scene.

Calle Betis, by the river in Triana, is the pricey exception but earns one night for the view of the lit Giralda from the far bank.

  4. 04

    The dishes from here

Order salmorejo (thicker than gazpacho, with ham and egg), spinach with chickpeas (an Arab legacy and the best cheap tapa in the city), fried fish, pork cheek or oxtail, and in summer, gazpacho.

To drink, fino or manzanilla, well chilled: it’s the local wine and it carries everything fried. Beer works too, but fino is what a Sevillian orders.

And for dessert, nothing: you change bars.

Frequently asked
