JFK to Manhattan
1 h route3 stopsBest: With a suitcase at rush hour, the train beats the cab, no argumentUpdated July 2026
JFK is about 25 kilometres from the centre and the city has this solved: everything runs through the AirTrain, the automated train linking the terminals to each other and to two stations where you connect onwards. Between terminals the AirTrain is free, you only pay on exiting at Jamaica or Howard Beach.

From there you choose speed or price. From Jamaica the LIRR commuter train is the fastest: about 35 minutes total to Penn Station or Grand Central Madison. From Jamaica or Howard Beach the regular subway is the cheapest and considerably slower. And then there’s the taxi.
The route, stop by stop
3 STOPS- 01
AirTrain + LIRR: the fastest
You take the AirTrain at your terminal, get off at Jamaica and connect there to the LIRR, the Long Island commuter railway. In about 35 minutes total you’re in Manhattan, and at rush hour that’s an hour less than the taxi.
A fact many people haven’t updated: the LIRR no longer only reaches Penn Station. Since 2023 it also runs into Grand Central Madison, a new station dug beneath Grand Central, so if your hotel is on the East Side you save yourself crossing town.
Pick your destination by where you sleep, not by habit.

AirTrain + subway: the cheapest
The budget route: AirTrain to Jamaica and the E train there, or AirTrain to Howard Beach and the A train. After that it’s regular subway to wherever you’re going, with changes.
It’s considerably slower than the LIRR and with a suitcase, on New York subway stairs, many stations have no lift, it becomes grim.
But it has one enormous virtue: the subway runs 24 hours, every day. Land at three in the morning and this is still going.

The yellow cab and its flat fare
Yellow cabs have a flat fare between JFK and anywhere in Manhattan, in both directions: no meter running and traffic doesn’t matter, which in this city is real insurance. Only from the official terminal queue. Never with anyone who approaches you inside.
The detail that surprises people: the flat fare doesn’t include tolls or surcharges, nor of course the tip, which here is 15-20% in a cab too. So the number you read isn’t the number you’ll pay.
At rush hour, the LIRR also gets there sooner for considerably less.
Frequently asked
What’s the fastest way from JFK to Manhattan?
The AirTrain to Jamaica and then the LIRR commuter train: about 35 minutes total to Penn Station or Grand Central Madison. At rush hour it beats the taxi comfortably, and since 2023 it also reaches Grand Central, not only Penn.
Is the JFK AirTrain free?
Between terminals, yes: you can move around the airport for nothing. It’s only charged entering or exiting at Jamaica and Howard Beach, the stations that connect to the LIRR and the subway.
Does the JFK taxi have a fixed price?
Yes, yellow cabs have a flat fare between JFK and anywhere in Manhattan, no meter and regardless of traffic. But tolls, surcharges and the tip, 15-20%, are on top, so you pay more than the advertised figure.
