Day trips from New York

8 h route3 stopsBest: October: the Hudson Valley in autumn is the whole reasonUpdated July 2026

IN SHORT

Leaving New York on a short trip is arguable, the city is worth weeks, but if you’re here more than four days or you’re repeating, there are three directions worth it, and all are doable by train from Grand Central or Penn Station, no car.

Timing matters more here than anywhere else in this guide: the Hudson Valley in October, with the foliage, is one of the most beautiful things in the northern hemisphere. In March it’s a bare grey wood. Same place, different trip.

The route, stop by stop

3 STOPS
  1. 01

    The Hudson Valley · 1-2 h

⏱ 8 hMetro-North from Grand Central, along the river bank

The train leaves Grand Central and hugs the Hudson for a long hour, so the journey is already the trip. This valley is where the Hudson River School was born, the first genuinely American painting movement: in the 19th century a group of painters decided these landscapes were as worthy as European ones and set about painting them.

There are three good stops. Beacon has Dia:Beacon, an enormous former biscuit factory turned minimalist art museum, with natural light and room for works that fit nowhere else.

Cold Spring is a one-street town with trails around it. And Hyde Park has the Vanderbilt mansions and Roosevelt’s house. In October, any of the three.

  2. 02

    Coney Island · 1 h

⏱ 5 hD, F, N or Q to the end of the line

This one doesn’t take you out of the city: take the subway and get off at the beach, on the same fare as always. Coney Island was America’s amusement park in the early 1900s, with millions of visitors a year, and it declined for decades into somewhere melancholy and wonderful. What remains: the Cyclone, a 1927 wooden roller coaster still running and rattling worryingly, the boardwalk, Nathan’s, the hot dog house since 1916 that runs the Fourth of July eating contest, and a real beach, packed in summer. It’s the strangest and most American thing you can do in a day here.

  3. 03

    Philadelphia · 1 h 30

⏱ 10 hTrain from Penn Station

Ninety minutes by train drops you in the city where American independence was declared and the Constitution written. Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell are ten minutes’ walk from the station, and the historic park is free to enter, though in season you need a timed pass. The rest is good too: the Art Museum, with the Rocky steps, and Reading Terminal Market, from 1893, which is where to eat. And yes, the cheesesteak is from here, and yes, the argument about which one is the good one has been running for eighty years and won’t be settled today.

Frequently asked

Is it worth leaving New York on a short trip?

If you’re here under four days, no: the city holds far more. If you’re repeating or staying longer, the Hudson Valley in October is among the best in the country, and Coney Island runs on a subway fare without counting as a day trip.

When should you go to the Hudson Valley?

In October, for the autumn foliage: it’s one of the most beautiful things in the northern hemisphere and it’s the reason to go. In winter or early spring it’s a bare wood and the same trip makes no sense.

Can you do Philadelphia from New York in a day?

Yes: there’s a train from Penn Station and it’s ninety minutes. That’s plenty for Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell (the historic park is free, with a timed pass in season) Reading Terminal Market and the Art Museum.
