From Vancouver airport to the centre
2 stopsUpdated July 2026
The airport surcharge is only paid in one direction. The Canada Line, the automated metro linking the airport with downtown, charges a supplement called AddFare on top of the normal fare, but only when you leave the airport: going towards it, from the city, you pay an ordinary metro fare and that’s that. It’s a detail almost nobody knows and it saves you money on half the trip.

And there’s a fresh figure worth checking: that surcharge went up on 1 July 2026, from five to six and a half Canadian dollars, thirty per cent in one go. It’s still worth it against a taxi by a distance, but the gap has narrowed, and if there are three or four of you the maths is no longer obvious.

The Canada Line
It leaves from under the terminal and reaches Waterfront, downtown, in twenty-six minutes, driverless, with no changes and a train every six to ten minutes. It’s one of the easiest transfers anywhere and there isn’t much to explain: you get off the plane, you get on the train, you arrive.
The only complication is the AddFare, the airport surcharge, and its rule is the thing to know: it only applies leaving the airport. When you go back towards it from the city, you pay an ordinary metro fare, with no supplement. People don’t know this and buy more ticket than they need.
And the date warning: on 1 July 2026 the surcharge went from five to six and a half, thirty per cent up. Check it before travelling, because it’s a live figure and with fares of this kind nobody tells you.

The taxi, and when it pays
Airport taxis don’t run the meter downtown: there are flat zone fares by destination, posted at the rank, so there’s no negotiating and no surprise. Downtown is thirty or forty minutes depending on traffic, against the train’s twenty-six.
With the SkyTrain this direct, the taxi is for two cases. One: big luggage, skis or small children, because the train is comfortable but it’s a train. Two, and this is new: if there are three or four of you, with the AddFare charged per person and having gone up thirty per cent in July 2026, the gap against a single taxi isn’t what it was.
Do the multiplication before deciding: for one or two, the train wins without argument.
