Day trips from Jakarta

10 h route3 stopsBest: Leave before seven or after ten. In between, don’tUpdated July 2026

IN SHORT

Day trips from Jakarta have one enemy and it’s the usual one: the road. Anything leaving by land depends on what time you go, and the bad windows triple the journey. The rule: leave before seven in the morning or after ten, and come back before three or after eight.

That said, there are two things nearby that almost nobody associates with this city: an archipelago of beach islands two hours away by boat, and the most accessible volcano in Java.

The route, stop by stop

3 STOPS
  1. 01

The Thousand Islands · 1-2 h by boat

⏱ 10 hBoat from Ancol or Muara Angke harbour

Jakarta’s best-kept secret: opposite the city, in the bay, is an archipelago of more than a hundred small islands (the Kepulauan Seribu, the Thousand Islands, though there aren’t a thousand) with white sand, turquoise water and coral. One or two hours by boat from the harbour.

The near ones are heavily populated and the water isn’t much, you need the outer ones (Pari, Tidung, Harapan, Macan) where the water is clean and you can snorkel. It’s a full-day or one-night plan, and it’s full of Jakarta families at the weekend, not tourists.

Seeing a coral beach with a megacity skyline on the horizon is a hard image to forget.

  2. 02

    Bogor · 1 h by train

⏱ 7 hCommuter train from the centre: cheap and jam-free

The easy trip and the only one that doesn’t suffer the traffic, because it goes by commuter train: an hour from the centre and you’re in Bogor, in the mountains, where it’s genuinely cool. That’s why the Dutch chose it to escape Batavia’s heat.

What to see is the botanical garden, from 1817: 87 hectares with thousands of tropical species, enormous trees, an orchid garden and a palm collection planted when this was a colony. Next to it is the presidential palace, with deer grazing on the lawn.

A warning with some charm: Bogor is called the city of rain and it’s one of the most thunderstorm-prone places on the planet: it rains almost every afternoon. Go in the morning and take a raincoat.

  3. 03

    The Krakatoa volcano

⏱ 2 díasWest, in the Sunda Strait: car and boat

This doesn’t fit in a day, but it has to be told. In the strait between Java and Sumatra sits Krakatoa, which in 1883 produced one of the most violent eruptions in recorded history: the explosion was heard 4,800 kilometres away (on Rodrigues Island, near Mauritius) and it remains the loudest sound on record.

The island destroyed itself and the tsunami killed tens of thousands.

From the crater emerged, in 1927, Anak Krakatau, “the child of Krakatoa”, which has been growing ever since and is still active: in 2018 a collapse caused another deadly tsunami. It can be visited on two-day trips from Jakarta when activity allows, and that condition is real: check the status before booking anything.

Frequently asked

Are there beaches near Jakarta?

Yes: the Thousand Islands, an archipelago of more than a hundred islands in the bay itself, one or two hours by boat. The near ones are heavily populated, you want the outer ones (Pari, Tidung, Harapan) where the water is clean and there’s coral. It’s full of Jakarta families, not tourists.

What’s in Bogor?

An 1817 botanical garden with 87 hectares of tropical species, giant trees and a colonial-era palm collection, plus the presidential palace with deer on the lawn. It’s an hour away by commuter train, dodging the traffic, and it’s cool. It rains almost every afternoon: go in the morning.

Can you visit Krakatoa from Jakarta?

Yes, on two-day trips, it doesn’t fit in one, and only when volcanic activity allows. What you visit today is Anak Krakatau, “the child”, which emerged in 1927 and is still active: in 2018 a collapse caused a deadly tsunami. Check the status before booking.
