From Fiumicino airport to the centre

3 stopsUpdated July 2026

IN SHORT

There’s a detail in Rome’s airport transfer that sums the whole city up: the taxi’s flat fare from the airport is defined by the Aurelian walls, built between the years 271 and 275. If your hotel is inside that wall, fixed price. If it’s outside, the meter. A twenty-first-century transport contract bounded by a third-century defensive work.

And those rules aren’t a picturesque detail: they are literally what protects you from this airport’s classic scam. There are two trains and a taxi, and choosing well depends on something people don’t check: which station you actually want. Because the expensive direct train goes to Termini, and the cheap one goes precisely to the others.

The route, stop by stop

3 STOPS
  1. 01

    The Leonardo Express

    ⏱ 32 min

It leaves the terminal, stops nowhere and drops you at Roma Termini in thirty-two minutes, every quarter of an hour. If you’re sleeping in the eastern centre or near Termini, there isn’t much to think about. The one thing to check first is the timetable, because it isn’t a twenty-four-hour service: from the airport, trains run roughly from 05:38 to 23:27, so a flight landing at midnight falls outside. Worth knowing before you board, not at the baggage belt.

  2. 02

The FL1, which doesn’t go to Termini

    ⏱ 30-45 min

Plenty of people rule it out the moment they read that it skips Termini. The other way round: that’s the point of it.

It runs down the other bank and stops at Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina, three stations with metro links, and it costs considerably less than the Express. It comes every fifteen minutes on weekdays and every half hour at weekends and on holidays, which is the one detail to check if you’re travelling on a Sunday.

So the question isn’t “the good one or the cheap one”, it’s “which station am I going to”. If you’re sleeping in Trastevere, the FL1 puts you in your own neighbourhood while the Express would put you at Termini, across the city, to come back from. If you’re in Testaccio or Monti, Ostiense and the metro do the job.

  3. 03

The taxi, and the third-century wall

    ⏱ 45-60 min

The moment you walk out into arrivals, someone will approach you offering a car. That’s the scam, and it has worked for decades because people come out tired and say yes.

Rome’s official taxis are white, carry the city’s crest on the door, and are taken only at the official rank. The flat fare into the centre has rules and they’re worth knowing, because they’re what puts you in the right: it applies to any destination inside the Aurelian walls, still standing in stretches and still defining the centre, it includes luggage and every supplement, it works in both directions and it covers up to four passengers, as long as the ride is direct with no intermediate stops.

And the other half, which rarely gets said: if your hotel is outside the wall, or there are five of you, the meter runs and that’s perfectly legal. Knowing it avoids the argument and avoids overpaying.

Frequently asked

How do you get from Fiumicino airport to Rome?

The Leonardo Express runs direct to Termini in 32 minutes, every 15. The FL1 is cheaper and skips Termini: it calls at Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina, which have metro links. The choice depends on which station suits you, not on the price.

What is the flat taxi fare from Fiumicino?

There’s a flat fare to any destination inside the Aurelian walls, including luggage and supplements, valid both ways and covering up to 4 passengers, as long as it’s direct with no stops. If your destination is outside the walls or there are more than four of you, the meter runs and that’s legal. Official rank only, and only white cabs with the city crest.

Does the Leonardo Express run at night?

It isn’t a 24-hour service: from the airport it runs roughly 05:38 to 23:27. If your flight lands at midnight, the option is a taxi. Check the operator’s timetable before relying on the train.
