Where to stay in Osaka

1 h route4 stopsBest: All yearUpdated July 2026

IN SHORT

Minami and Kita, south and north, are Osaka’s two halves and locals use them to navigate. Kita is Umeda: stations, towers, department stores and the city’s transport hub. Minami is Namba and Dotonbori: food, neon, theatres and the night.

The quick rule: if you came to eat and go out, Minami. If you’ll use Osaka as a base for the Kansai region, Kita, because that’s where the trains leave from.

The route, stop by stop

4 STOPS
  1. 01

    Namba and Shinsaibashi (Minami)

Most people stay here, and rightly: Dotonbori, Kuromon, hundreds of restaurants and the Shinsaibashi shopping arcade, all on foot. And from Namba station the Nankai runs direct to Kansai airport, which saves a change with luggage. In exchange it’s noisy: the bar streets run very late and in high season there are a lot of people. Checking exactly which street the hotel is on matters more here than elsewhere.

  2. 02

    Umeda (Kita)

Umeda holds Osaka station and the terminals of the private railway companies, so it’s the best place if you plan day trips to Kyoto, Nara, Kobe or Himeji. There are hotels of every size, department stores and food in the station basements, which is better than it sounds. It’s tidier and less picturesque than Minami, and considerably quieter at night. For work trips, or for anyone catching early trains, it’s the logical choice.

  3. 03

    Shin-Osaka

The shinkansen stops at Shin-Osaka, north of the centre and separate from it. Staying here makes sense only logistically: if you arrive or leave by bullet train with luggage, or if you’re chaining cities and want to minimise changes. There’s nothing to see around it and the area is offices and transit hotels. The centre is about ten minutes away by metro.

  4. 04

    Tennoji and the south

Tennoji is in the south, beside the Shitenno-ji temple and the zoo, with a large park and the Abeno Harukas tower, among the tallest in Japan, with a viewing deck. Hotel prices are usually better than in Minami or Kita. The Haruka from Kansai airport calls here, and the metro connects to everything in minutes. A good choice for longer stays or tighter budgets, with Shinsekai a walk away.

Frequently asked

Better to stay in Namba or Umeda?

Namba (Minami) if you came for the food and the night: Dotonbori is next door and the direct train to Kansai airport leaves from the same station. Umeda (Kita) if you’ll use Osaka as a base for Kyoto, Nara or Himeji, because it’s the rail hub and quieter at night.

What are Kita and Minami in Osaka?

The city’s two halves: Kita is the north, around Umeda and Osaka station, with the towers and the trains. Minami is the south, around Namba and Dotonbori, with the food and the nightlife. Locals navigate by those two names.
