Day trips from Lisbon

10 h route4 stopsBest: April to October. Sintra, better on weekdaysUpdated July 2026

IN SHORT

Sintra is forty minutes away by train and the trip almost nobody skips: hills of fairy-tale palaces, cooler and greener than Lisbon, listed by UNESCO in its entirety. The catch is that everyone knows it, so the key is to go early and, if you can, on a weekday.

But it isn’t the only one. The Estoril coast is reached by train from the centre, there’s a walled medieval town to the north, and to the south, across the Tagus, hill-and-estuary beaches with dolphins. All under an hour away.

The route, stop by stop

4 STOPS
  1. 01

    Sintra

The Sintra hills trap the Atlantic damp and create a cool, misty microclimate where Portuguese royalty built pleasure palaces from the Middle Ages on. The mid-nineteenth-century Palácio da Pena is the icon: a red-and-yellow Romantic delirium on a peak, commissioned by King Ferdinand II.

The Quinta da Regaleira hides gardens with grottoes and a spiral initiation well descending underground. And the castelo dos Mouros, the Moorish wall crowning another summit.

It’s too much for one day: pick two places and leave the rest. The train leaves from Rossio station in the centre, and the town is tiny and heavily visited, so getting up to the palaces on the 434 bus or on foot, unhurried, is part of the day. Going early changes the experience entirely.

  2. 02

    Cascais and Estoril

The Cascais line leaves from Cais do Sodré and hugs the water the whole way, about forty minutes with the estuary alongside. Estoril was the elegant resort of the 1930s and 40s, a refuge for exiled kings and wartime spies (Ian Fleming passed through, and something of it is in James Bond) its casino still standing.

Cascais, the end of the line, is a fishing town turned summer resort, with small beaches, a bay and a lively centre.

A walk away is the Boca do Inferno, a chasm where the sea rushes in and bursts against the rock. It’s the easy escape for a sunny day with nothing planned.

  3. 03

    Óbidos

Óbidos, a white walled town a little under an hour to the north, has kept itself so intact that for centuries Portuguese kings gave it as a wedding gift to their queens. You enter through a tile-covered gate, climb onto the wall and walk the whole circuit along the top, with no railing, the red-roofed town below.

Its speciality is ginja de Óbidos, a sour-cherry liqueur served in an edible chocolate cup: you drink the liqueur and eat the cup.

It’s reached by bus from Lisbon, and the town takes a long half-day.

  4. 04

    Arrábida and Setúbal

Across the bridge to the south rises the Serra da Arrábida, a limestone mountain that drops to the sea in coves of turquoise water and white sand, among the best beaches near Lisbon. Beside it, Setúbal is a large fishing port with a dish of its own, choco frito, battered and fried cuttlefish.

In the Sado estuary, next to Setúbal, lives a resident population of bottlenose dolphins you can see by boat.

It’s the least touristy of the four trips and the one that most calls for a car or some planning with public transport.

Frequently asked

What’s the best day trip from Lisbon?

Sintra, with little doubt: forty minutes by train and fairy-tale palaces in hills with a microclimate. If you already know it or want a beach, the Cascais coast leaves the centre by train. For something quieter, walled Óbidos to the north or the Arrábida coves to the south.

How do you get to Sintra from Lisbon and avoid the queues?

By train from Rossio station, about forty minutes. For the queues: go early, ideally on a weekday, buy the Pena ticket online in advance and pick only two palaces rather than attempting them all. The town is small and clogs by mid-morning.
